Electives

In addition to our Pre-Academies,  LGMS also offers the following electives:

 

AVID logo

AVID

AVID students develop organizational and study skills, learn strategies to enhance their academic work in all classes, practice critical thinking, and increase confidence in their academic abilities.  Students participate in motivational activities that introduce them to various colleges and careers.

Engineering

LGMS Engineering is a STEM class where students will learn to use the Design Process as both an Engineering planning tool and a real world problem solving system. The program integrates physical science concepts with construction projects, career research and communication skills and access to online design software.

 

Fine Arts

The LGMS Fine Arts program works to enhance student learning and achievement through music and visual arts classes.

Art – Students will experiment with different media and techniques to create unique works of art.  They will begin with developing basic drawing skills and students will explore mediums like colored pencil, oil pastel, chalk, and watercolor paint.

Band – Students will learn instrumental technique, foundational music literacy, and musical awareness through rehearsal, performance, and study of band literature. Students work on the fundamentals of music notation, sound production, instrument care, and rehearsal strategies.  Students may be required to participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day.

Chorus – Students will develop vocal techniques and skills, creative thinking skills, and an appreciation for various works of choral literature.  Students are required to participate in a small number of rehearsals and performances outside the school day.

Drama – Students new to this artistic discipline will learn the foundations and history of the theater.  Appreciation for the craft will be taught through the study of the world’s most famous playwrights and their esteemed work.

Musical Theater – Students with any level of musical theater experience will develop acting, dancing, and singing skills.  Students will learn and perform a variety of songs from Broadway musicals to pop songs.  Students will be required to participate in a small number of performances and rehearsals outside the school day.

Orchestra – Students will study the development of foundational instrumental ensemble techniques, performance skills, musical literacy, and aesthetic awareness.  Students may be required to participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day.  This course may also require students to obtain a musical instrument from an outside source.

Keyboarding

This course is designed to provide instruction in introductory keyboarding, word processing, electronic presentation, computer hardware, internet, and business application skills.  These competencies provide the skills necessary to ensure increased productivity and efficient utilization of computer equipment.

 

Spanish

Students in this course will be introduced to the Spanish language and culture. Students will engage in short social interactions using phrases and simple sentences and will learn to recognize cultural practices and traditions of countries where Spanish is spoken.

 

 

Physical Education

Students will learn the long term benefits of regular physical fitness, determine their personal target heart rate and how to adjust intensity, and participate in games, sports, and physical activities both individually and on teams.  They will be expected to participate in moderate vigorous activity daily.

 

Yearbook/Journalism

The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop basic skills in the production of print media.  Hands-on activities are integral in this course. The course may require students to participate in activities beyond the school day.
